The festive season is well and truly upon us, and that means the winding down of some of the country’s main institutions including Parliament, but also the jobs market, as computers shut down and work phones are switched off for a few blissful days of seasonal excess.
If you’re on the hunt for a new role in the new year then this is the perfect time to regroup and make sure you’re primed to send out those applications when we emerge bleary-eyed into 2019. Here are our top tips for making the most of the break: refresh your CV, regroup and take stock.
Refresh your CV
It’s easy to send out the same CV time and time again when you’re on the hunt for a new role, and the idea of jazzing it up a bit can be a dull one, especially if you perhaps have several CVs geared towards particular roles or industry sectors. Trust me, though, spending some time going through it - or them - just to make sure it’s still tip top is a good idea during the quieter period when you’re not panicking about applications.
Read through it line by line and answer yourself these questions:
Do you have anything to add? Any experience gained in your current role, courses you have attended etc., may be worth adding.
Could anything be worded better? That synonym for ‘hardworking’ may have sounded good at 3am when you added it to your CV, but I’ll bet it doesn’t read as well now.
Are your aims and goals still the same? Do they apply to the kinds of roles you’ll be applying for? Employers may be looking for candidates with particular goals as they show that you’re aspirational and forward-thinking.
Are you emphasising the right things? Similar to the above, what are the points that you know potential employers in your desired industry/sector are looking for, and have you brought those to the fore?
Make all the changes that you need to, don’t look at it again for a few days and then go back to it and see if you agree with the way you have written the additions, and that they fit with the rest of your CV.
The Christmas break is a good time to have a proper think about your career path and make sure that you’re happy with your plan. It can be all too easy to pootle along working in similar roles because that’s what you know, and never giving yourself time to reassess and make sure that you’re heading in the right direction.
Read through your CV and take some time to agree with yourself that you are - or aren’t - doing what you want to do. Either conclusion you come to is fine, and you’ll be glad you gave yourself the time.
Be an opportunist
Don’t forget that while there may be fewer roles around, there are also fewer applicants searching for them during this period. Companies still need to employ people, so keep your eyes peeled and take opportunities when they arise!
Even though it is a quieter time of year, we’re all here working to help find our fantastic candidates new and exciting opportunities, tailored specifically to individuals and their goals.
