Shire is a global Pharma company founded in 1986, their mission is to "develop and market medicines that improve the quality of life for patients and their care givers." The company started by selling a range of calcium products designed to help with bone disease. It then progressed to include Hormone Replacement Therapy and Alzheimer's products, including a partnership with Janssen to develop Reminyl, which proceeded to become a multi million pound product.
Calichew is one of the original products Shire made. It contains 2 active ingredients, calcium carbonate and colecalciferol. Calcium supplements are useful in osteoporosis; a calcium intake that is twice the recommended daily allowance slows the rate of bone loss and reduces the risk of fractures.
Reminyl is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It contains the active ingredient galantamine hydrobromide, which is a type of medicine called an acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by slowing the breakdown of a compound in the body called acetylcholme. Reminyl is used to treat mild to moderately severe dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease, rather than being a cure.
