Pharmacist Herbert Falk founded Remefa GmbH & Co KG in 1960 after completing his studies in medicine and producing his own cardiovascular drops. In 1963 the company became Dr Falk Arzneimittel GmbH & Co KG and in 1989 changed to the Dr Falk Pharma GmbH of today. Since 1995 Herbert's wife Ursula has worked for the company and in 2004 their son, Dr Martin Falk, also joined the independent family business.

Based in Germany, the company employs around one hundred members of staff, with subsidiaries in Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and the Ukraine. A third of their sales take place in Germany with the rest mainly occurring in eastern and western Europe. They do not have a large sales force but instead, through the Falk Foundation, hold international symposia, gastro-forums and postgraduate courses. They also provide a range of literature and regularly liaise with national and international societies and patient associations.

Products

Dr Falk Pharma GmbH specialises in the development and sales of hepatology (treatments for disorders of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and biliary tree) and gastroenterology products (for the digestive system).

In the 1960s the company launched their Hepatofalk preparation for regenerative and protective liver therapy, as well as Orotofalk and ADEK-Falk.

1974 saw the development of Chenofalk for the treatment of gall bladder stones and in 1978 came Ursofalk, still the leading medication for cholestatic liver diseases.

In 1984 Dr Falk Pharma GmbH produced Salofalk, the world's first mesalazine preparation for inflammatory bowel disease and a further product, for the same condition, was launched in 1998 (Budenofalk). Other products include Azafalk, Endofalk and Mucofalk.
