Discovery Pharmaceuticals provides the NHS with low cost versions of some of the most widely used medicines. Since 1999 they have worked with primary care trusts to produce products to meet their requirements. Those that meet all the requirements are known as eco-generics; 12 have been produced since 2001.
The price of Eco-generics to the NHS must be closely related to the cost of the manufacture with minimal sales and marketing expenditure included. To classify as eco-generics non tariff products must also aim to be the most inexpensive on the market and tariff products must be at least 10% below the tariff. Products are versions of the most widely prescribed medicines provided by well known suppliers, the costs of which are kept to a minimum because Discovery Pharmaceuticals spends little on sales and marketing campaigns.
