This independent company specialises in the licensing and marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals. The company began as a retail pharmacy chain in 1981, becoming one of the UK's largest multiple retail pharmacy chains during the 1990s. After acquiring its first brand in 2000, the company divested the retail outlets and became a pharmaceutical company. Now, Chemidex Pharma develops branded pharmaceuticals in-house and has also acquired further ethical brands from Elan, GSK and LAB.
Emeside. This product contains ethosuximide, which stabilises electrical activity in the brain and can therefore be used to treat epilepsy. It is usually used to treat petit mal episodes, for grand mal seizures it needs to be used in conjunction with other anti-epilepsy drugs.
Lyflex (Baclofen) relieves the voluntary muscle spasticity associated with disorders such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, meningitis and following a head trauma.
Penbritin contains ampicillin, a type of penicillin, and is used to treat bacterial infections. It is suitable for infections of the airways, ears, nose and throat as well as for urine infections, sexually transmitted infections and some infections of the blood or internal organs.
Ponstan contain the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, mefenamic acid. These are used to relieve pain and inflammation in a range of musculoskeletal conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and muscular pain as well as for traumatic pain such as sprains, fractures and dislocations. It is also suitable for toothache, headaches, painful menstrual periods and pain following surgery or childbirth.
Tagamet, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, contains cimetidine, an H2 receptor antagonist. This product is designed to reduce production of stomach acid, preventing conditions such as peptic ulcers. It relieves the symptoms of heartburn and the damage to the oesophagus caused by acid reflux.
Uniroid HC treats external haemorrhoids, relieving the pain and irritation associated with pruritus ani. It can also be used for internal haemorrhoids.
