From the Fresenius family's ownership of a pharmacy in Frankfurt in the 1700s, Dr Eduard Fresenius founded his pharmaceutical company in 1912, the main products being injection solutions, serologic reagents and Bormelin nasal ointment. By the 1930s he had around 400 employees and in the 1960s the company began to sell dialysis machines abroad, gaining substantial market share. The 1970s saw the manufacture of infusion solutions and medical disposables and the first ready-to-use tube feed, Fresubin. Fresenius Kabi was formed in 1999 when the Fresenius group acquired Pharmacia and Upjohn's (Kabi) infusion solution business.
Employing over 14,500 people worldwide, Fresenius Kabi are leaders in infusion therapy and clinical nutrition and aim to improve the lives of critically and chronically ill patients. Their operating profit for 2005 was 234 million euros.
Fresenius Kabi's product areas can be divided up as follows Infusion, Parenteral, Medical Devices and Hesylatin (drug delivery systems).
Devices include enterals, drainages, infusion disposables, bedside infusion technology, point of care analysis.
