Graduate Sales Jobs

The Pharmaceutical Sales Industry is open to people from a wide range of backgrounds, not just graduates. Indeed a number of the pharmaceutical Representatives we have worked with are people who left school at 16. That is not to say though that they entered the Pharmaceutical Industry as a 16 year old school-leaver. In fact they are usually people with an interesting commercial background and a strong CV showing clear and sensible progression from one job to another. These are usually ambitious people who have been moving onwards and upwards ever since they started to work. And they are virtually always people whose career background is in sales. They will often have worked in quite a technical/scientific role so that these skills, combined with their sales skills, can transfer successfully into Pharmaceutical Sales.

However, this is by no means the norm. Normally Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives are educated to at least diploma level and usually degree standard. Therefore a large number of Trainee Pharmaceutical Sales positions are open to graduates only. This can sometimes be overridden if you have demonstrable scientific acumen and a history of working within a competitive sales environment but sometimes a degree is essential, and sometimes there is further specification that this is a science degree.

So, the Pharmaceutical Sales Industry looks favourably on graduates. But does it matter what you are a graduate in? By and large, no. Some pharmaceutical Companies will ask for science graduates for the graduate jobs, but most are simply looking for evidence that you have the ability to see a challenge like a degree through to the end. As with all employers, they will be pleased to see a high classification like a 2.1 or a First Class degree but this is by no means essential. What they want to know is that you are the type of person capable of seeing a long term project through to fruition; able to research, interpret and present information. They also like to hear about extra activities you were involved with while at university, for example if you worked with the students union or belonged to a sports, science or drama club. They are particularly interested in examples of teamwork and leadership, either in the context of your extra-curricular activities or as part of your course.

It is usually not enough to simply be a graduate. You also need to show a keen and genuine interest in the Pharmaceutical Industry you need to have thoroughly researched it and spent time shadowing a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. You also need to be able to prove that you are interested in sales and have the ability to be persuasive. Ideally you will have worked, even temporarily, in a sales environment but alternatively you may have excellent examples of times you used these types of skills during your time at university for example organising a society ball, promoting and selling tickets for it.
