June 2007

This month, Pf spoke to Dr Allan Abbott, Regional Oncology Specialist for Cephalon UK. After 28 years in the healthcare industry, first as a Hospital Biochemist and then in various roles in the pharma industry, he feels oncology is the perfect place to be.

What has been the best move you ever made role-or company-wise?

Without doubt, moving into my current role. Oncology is an area of clinical medicine that I have had particular interest in, both for personal and professional reasons. Therefore, moving into this field was in many ways a natural life-goal progression. In this key specialty I truly believe I am making a difference.

What attracted you to Cephalon?

We live in a world where fate plays a huge role in our lives. At the same time as I wanted to move into oncology, Cephalon was looking for someone to develop its oncology business in Scotland (breast cancer and lymphoma). I saw this as an exciting challenge.

What do you find challenging about your role?

Working in the oncology world has a real mixture of challenges. Firstly, the culture is completely different to the other areas of clinical medicine I have worked in. Breast oncologists are truly busy people. The demands on them make them remarkable individuals. They are dealing with patients suffering from the early to terminal stages of breast cancer, on a daily basis. Secondly, my key roles include building and delivering a Cephalon Oncology Service. This encompasses interaction with the Cancer Networks in Scotland so that together we can deliver both better patient care and improved patient survival outcomes. My day-to-day activities demand several different roles, including key account and project management, training and financial implications. Finally, I need to be completely people-focused. All of these contribute to make this not only an interesting role, but a rewarding one.

What advice would you give to an ambitious representative hoping to develop their career?

Oncology is becoming an extremely important area for the pharma industry. There is an ever-increasing number of cancer centres, with a corresponding evolution in the number of consultant clinical oncologist positions. With this in mind, doctors are always looking for additional clinical options. Cephalon are researching significantly into the treatment of cancer so our future is looking very exciting indeed. I would thoroughly recommend working in the cancer field as it invests in all our futures.

Lucy Randle offers advice on how to get noticed as a talented individual.

Strong talent rarely goes unnoticed. However, to be absolutely certain that your unique strengths are recognised and rewarded, I recommend following these simple guidelines.

Results

You will not be noticed or celebrated if you do not achieve results! To be considered as among the best you need to deliver an exceptional performance across all aspects of your job. What’s more, you need to communicate your results sensitively, subtly and at the appropriate time. Do not draw attention to your successes at a team member’ s expense.

Development

Take responsibility for agreeing a structured development program with your manager and remember that ownership for meeting the goals is yours! Don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone to try something new. Consider taking a ‘sideways’ step to broaden your experience and understanding of the business. It is vital to stay aware of your limitations and ask for support when you need it. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know. When advice is offered, accept it graciously and act upon it where appropriate. Sometimes it is worth looking outside of work for development opportunities, you may wish to study for a professional qualification in your own time.

Attitude

Effective relationship building is the key to your success. Internal relationships are just as important as external. Both customers and colleagues will appreciate and benefit from a positive, solutions-focused attitude. Check that you understand expectations and try to be diplomatic about any concerns, confusion or inconsistencies. Importantly, your working habits need to fit in with your company’s culture and values. A proactive and enthusiastic approach is always appreciated. Try also to build a reputation for being reliable and organised. Finally, entering industry competitions, where your passion, commitment and innovation will certainly be put to the test, is an excellent way to differentiate yourself.

TIP

The STAR team is constantly exposed to useful and innovative ideas relating to all aspects of employment and recruitment. Each month, a member of the team will share a favourite tip with you.
