Pierre-Fabre’s Karen McIntosh tells Pf about her passion for the oncology market and why Pierre-Fabre is the perfect company for her.
Professionally, when I first became a hospital sales specialist in 1996, the product I was promoting was also licensed in the oncology market and it seemed to be a very new and exciting disease area to be involved in. Now I’m involved in the treatment of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer. Back then, using routine chemotherapy in this group of patients was still controversial, but today every NSCLC patient is considered for chemotherapy!
On a more personal level, everyone knows someone that has had cancer and knows the devastating impact that the diagnosis has, not only on the patient, but also on family and friends. I feel that the product I’m involved in helps extend their life, yet doesn’t cause some of the devastating side effects some chemotherapies do.
I needed a new challenge but still wanted to work within oncology, so my ideal company was a small but oncology-focused company and Pierre-Fabre fits the bill perfectly. I love the autonomy that Pierre- Fabre gives me, I don’t have to involve others in implementing my business plan. I drive the sales from Plan to Target! Being a smaller company, if you have a good idea, it can be implemented virtually straight away, which can mean that we are more responsive to changes within the market.
You have to be focused. I initially went round my territory and gathered information, allowing me to analyse where to target my time and effort, having some short-term wins and some longer-term projects. From this I drew up a working business plan that I review regularly. To initiate change within an oncology centre or unit you have to have a clear goal and someone to lead it from within. You need buy-in from decision makers and it is critical that you keep them informed on progress and the timeframes involved.
Navelbine Oral fulfils patient and customer needs, especially in this ever-changing NHS.We have comparative Phase III efficacy data, and having an oral formulation gives patients the choice of taking their treatment at home, which means they can be getting on with their lives, reducing the number of hospital visits. This also alleviates some of the capacity issues that chemotherapy departments have, with more patients being treated earlier and more IV treatments becoming available. It also costs less than the competition.
Passion, enthusiasm and being patient-focused.
Lucy Randle discusses the importance of celebrating success...
As a team, decide what will constitute a success. Sales achievements will always matter, but what about other successes? Reward-worthy behaviours may also include positive attitudes, perseverance and effective teamwork. It will not be possible to anticipate all the accomplishments of the team so be willing to allocate awards spontaneously, as and when someone does something exceptional.
A reward scheme is only an incentive if the prizes appeal to the participants! As far as possible, tailor rewards to the individual.
Vouchers enable the receiver to choose something to suit their tastes and interests. A personalized gift can be even more special it might be possible to implement a system whereby the team can agree on and select a prize to best suit their teammate. Remember that in some instances recognition is reward enough; a round of applause or celebratory group email can inspire and motivate not just the achiever, but the whole team.
In order to instigate and maintain a culture of celebration and reward you need to be consistent in commending successes; team members need to feel secure enough to share their achievements, it must become ‘the norm’ to do so. Therefore, when you see reward-worthy behaviour, comment on it, applaud it or note it down and mention it later whichever you prefer, but don’t overlook it.
The STAR team is constantly exposed to useful and innovative ideas relating to all aspects of employment and recruitment. Each month, a member of the team will share a favourite tip with you.
