The UK based pharmaceutical industry employs around 73,000 people, from Medical reps, Pharmaceutical Reps, Vaccine Reps to Account managers.
The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) is the trade association for more than 70 prescription medicine producing companies in the UK. The Association provides a range of services and support for its member companies, which research, develop, manufacture and supply more than 80% of the medicines prescribed through the NHS. Located in Whitehall, central London, it is ideally placed to represent the views of the pharmaceutical industry to Government, politicians, the media, the scientific and medical world and the general public. It also has offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
As the leading trade association in its sector, its opinions carry real weight, ensuring a fast track into negotiations between the industry, UK Government, European Union and other authorities. To ensure that all the issues of importance to the industry are covered in depth in a similarly participative way, eight ABPI working committees address the key areas detailed below, which are of primary importance to the industry:
• Commercial
• Intellectual property
• Legal
• Medical
• Smaller Companies
• Manufacturing
• Research and Development
• Worldwide Regulatory
The ABPI’s mission is to represent the pharmaceutical industry operating in the United Kingdom in a way that:
• Assures patients have access to the best available medicine
• Creates a favourable political and economic environment
• Encourages innovative research and development
• Affords fair commercial returns
The pharmaceutical industry in Britain has an impressive reputation based on a long history of achievement. On average, it takes 10 to 12 year and £550 million to develop a new medicine, with no guarantee of commercial success. The industry relies on a solid science base, dedicated researchers and notable business strengths. (According to figures collated by IMS audited markets in 2007, the top pharmaceutical corporation is USA based Pfizer, followed by the UK’s GlaxoSmithKline in second place, and ranked in third place, Swiss based company Novartis.)
STAR holds general affiliate membership, designed for companies who have a legitimate interest in the well-being of the pharmaceutical industry in the United Kingdom and who conduct their business in the United Kingdom. We believe as recruiters of Pharmaceutical Reps and Medical Reps that it is important to keep up to date with all the latest industry changes.
All medical sales and pharmaceutical sales representatives are required to pass the examination of the ABPI within their first 2 years in the role. The qualification can be gained via 2 different formats: the traditional exam process, and the ABPI Accredited Programme, where candidates study for modular exams using company training materials accredited by the ABPI Institute for Education and Training. The traditional examination structure requires you to take a paper compromising of modules which cover the industry and code of practice, the human body, pathology and pharmacology, and body systems; the latter covers topics such as cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous system, special senses and digestive body systems, to name a selection of the many possible topics. Candidates are required to pass all three papers with a minimum pass mark of 60%. Candidates who score more than 80% in all three papers are eligible for distinction, providing they also pass three specialist papers at the same sitting with 80% pass rate or more. Specialist papers cover topics such as arthritis and bone disease, pharmacology and diabetes, to name a few examples, and are based on material contained in volume 2 of the ABPI learning material. The Accredited Programme also adopts a modular approach to the ABPI examination; candidates study materials based on company product training manuals which have been accredited to the ABPI.
